The Area

Walk to the Burton Pynsent Monument, a 30m high column for great views over West Sedgemoor and beyond. The monument was erected by Sir William Pitt the Elder in 1765 in honour of Sir William Pynsent who left him the Burton Pynsent Estate in thanks for his opposition to the imposition of a tax on cider. From The Olde Forge follow the public footpaths to the monument.

Swell Woods, Curry Rivel is also a popular attraction being one of the most important nature reserves in England. Swell wood is a fairly small wood which forms part of the West Sedgemoor RSPB Nature Reserve. The wood has one of the largest and most easily viewed heronries with over 100 nests. From The Olde Forge turn right onto the A378 to Taunton. Swell Woods are on your right after a short distance.

Red Hill, a small field owned by the National Trust on the edge of the Curry Rivel ridge is also a local landmark providing superb views over West Sedgemoor to the Quantock Hills. From The Olde Forge follow the public footpaths for an attractive walk.
